Superlativos en inglés: reglas, ejemplos e irregulares

6 minutos lectura

Con adjetivos cortos se agrega -est (tall → the tallest); con adjetivos largos se usa the most (beautiful → the most beautiful). Algunos son irregulares: good → the best, bad → the worst, far → the farthest / the furthest.

  • Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
  • This is the most interesting book I have.

Adjetivo corto taller than the tallest
Adjetivo largo more expensive than the most expensive
Ejemplo Ana is taller than Luis. Ana is the tallest in her family.

Reglas para formar los superlativos en inglés

Tipo de adjetivo Regla Ejemplos
Una sílaba the + adjetivo + -est tall → the tallest · fast → the fastest · old → the oldest
Una sílaba terminada en -e the + adjetivo + -st nice → the nicest · large → the largest · safe → the safest
Una sílaba terminada en consonante + vocal + consonante Se duplica la última consonante + -est big → the biggest · hot → the hottest · sad → the saddest · thin → the thinnest
Dos sílabas terminadas en -y La y cambia a i + -est happy → the happiest · easy → the easiest · funny → the funniest
Dos sílabas (la mayoría) the most + adjetivo famous → the most famous · careful → the most careful · boring → the most boring
Tres sílabas o más the most + adjetivo expensive → the most expensive · beautiful → the most beautiful · important → the most important

Detalles que conviene saber

  • No se duplica la consonante final si es w, x o y: new → the newest, slow → the slowest.
  • Algunos adjetivos de dos sílabas aceptan las dos formas, sobre todo los terminados en -er, -ow o -le: clever → the cleverest / the most clever, narrow → the narrowest / the most narrow, simple → the simplest / the most simple. También quiet → the quietest / the most quiet.

Adjetivo Comparativo Superlativo Ejemplo
good (bueno) better the best She is the best player on the team. – Es la mejor jugadora del equipo.
bad (malo) worse the worst That was the worst day of my life. – Fue el peor día de mi vida.
far (lejos) farther / further the farthest / the furthest Neptune is the farthest planet from the Sun.
little (poco) less the least He did the least work of all. – Él hizo el menor trabajo de todos.
much / many (mucho/s) more the most Who has the most books? – ¿Quién tiene más libros?
old (viejo, mayor) older / elder the oldest / the eldest My eldest brother lives in Lima.

Para todo lo demás, usa oldest: the oldest building in the city.

  • This is the least expensive option. – Esta es la opción menos cara.
  • Monday is the least busy day at the store.

  • Con «the» o un posesivo: el superlativo casi siempre lleva the, pero un posesivo lo reemplaza: She is my best friend (no my the best).
  • Con «in» para lugares y grupos: the biggest city in Mexico, the tallest student in the class.
  • Con «of» para periodos y conjuntos: the coldest day of the year, the best of all.
  • Con «ever» y el presente perfecto: This is the best movie I have ever seen (es la mejor película que he visto).
  • Con «one of the»: el sustantivo va en plural: Bogotá is one of the highest cities in the world.
